Procrastination Project – Guiltless Gilting

30 Dec

My most favorite weakness of mine (wait, what?) is my (ahem) ability to dream up a bevy of “Procrastination Projects” when I am in need of chore-avoidance (or chovoidance…does that work?)

If there is laundry to fold or guests arriving you can be sure I have reorganized the freezer or painted a canvas affixed with paper doilies. This habit was formed pre-Pinterest and has only spiraled further since its creation.

Thus, I bring to you the 18K Gold Gator’s story:

One brisk Autumn day, the boys wanted to go to the zoo…and while we are members (so it’s free) and said zoo is less than 7 miles away (so it’s quick) Momma wasn’t having it. There were suitcases to pack for an upcoming trip and all I could think of was my list of dread awaiting me at nap time. We compromised and visited an even free-er (no carousel tickets) and even closer (1 mile away) pet shop because it’s basically the same thing as a zoo anyway, is it not? As luck would have it, they were selling a snaggletoothed alligator as aquarium decor on clearance for $3.

Natch, I had to have it. Our home is a safe haven for animal oddities that can be spray painted and added to the lacquered menagerie.

So after saying goodbye to some furry potential pets and a few sprays of Krylon’s super gold paint later, our new friend was inducted into the family.

He now rests atop the Mid Century bar in the hallway underneath custom canvas and another gold-sprayed victim friend, the Nate Berkus turtle shell from Target. (I waited until it was on sale because I struggled with being like all the other mommy-diy-blogs but the truth is, it’s good design and I loved the shape and style. Will add its picture to this post soon!) Obvs I am not inventing some cray new design trend…spray painting animals has been around before Etsy came to be…but perhaps you can look at your field trips as a source of inspirado like I did that fateful pretend-zoo day.

The only downfall to this project is that like most metallic paint, the Krylon 18K dries instantaneously (which is actually a mega bonus) so this Procrastination Project did not derail me nearly as long as I had hoped. Ah well. Better luck next time.

**Note: This would be a cool project for UF/Gator fans – find a faux gator head like this one and lacquer it blue or orange. In our case since my hubs is a Seminole (and I am a Rollins Tar…never heard of it? because we didn’t have a football team. womp.) our gator head serves as a warning for other Gators who may enter our home. Or not. Whatevz.
